Hazel Forbes

she/her

Hiya! my name is Hazel, and I am a graphic designer! I love being part of a field where I can put my strategic mind and bucket-loads of creativity to use. While I love all aspects of graphic design, I thrive in UX/UI and environmental design, creating user-focused apps, signage and exhibits. Outside of design, I’m passionate about environmentalism and social justice. When I finally put down my MacBook and tablet, I can be found gardening, doing some DIY, having craft nights with my friends, or watching quiz shows with my pet reptiles. I also enjoy exploring the city — especially if it involves a new vegetarian restaurant or some karaoke!

Rainsaver

Gardens can play a huge role in combating climate change: they clean the air, reduce ambient temperatures, and produce local, seasonal food. However, gardening is a water and time-intensive hobby. RainSaver helps users help the planet by increasing a garden’s water and energy efficiency and by making it easier to create big, successful and sustainable gardens. The device uses a solar-powered rain barrel and sensor, paired with soaker hoses. RainSaver’s algorithm waters efficiently and automatically, based on weather patterns and your garden’s needs.

The Butcher’s Wife

This menu for The Butcher’s Wife, a vegetarian restaurant, was made with a tabbed design to ensure that the menu was easily navigable by diners. This was especially important as the business operates as both a restaurant, where diners are probably ordering several courses, and as a cafe, where guests may just have a dessert and drink. I topped this off with illustrations on the back of every page which parody meat cut diagrams. These were created in Illustrator using illustrations from nineteenth-century seed catalogues, and reflect the creativity of the menu, using vegetables as replacements for meat.
